Politehnica University Timișoara and the Welding Association of Romania, under the Romanian Alliance of Technical Universities (ARUT), organized for the first time a European premiere meeting, a meeting of metal building (design and execution) and welding specialists. For the first time, the specialists of the two
camps, "forced" to collaborate, sat at the same table to harmonize the two areas and to highlight the connection between them. The importance of knowledge of certain topics in both areas so that the resulting product is optimum (for example, in the design phase, the designer must have knowledge of welding technology so there will be no problems during execution) has also been emphasized.

Specialists with international recognition in the fields of metal constructions and welding, both in industry and in higher education, from Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Romania gathered at the Central Library of Politehnica University Timişoara, at a meeting opened by the UPT Rector, prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Serban, PhD. He stressed the existence of a long tradition of welding education, in Timisoara, started by Academician Corneliu Mikloşi. The Welding Technology Department, founded in 1953, was unique in our country until 1976, when similar departments appeared at other universities in our country.

In the guest speakers' speech, it was emphasized that the emergence of new efficient materials, innovative welding processes, the complexity of new European standards in the field of welding, high requirements for the quality of welded joints, while ensuring their safety in operation, the increasingly special aesthetic forms and the pressure of short execution deadlines lead to the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach to the field of welding, as well as the re-evaluation of education in this direction. The collaboration between the architect, the metal building designer and the welding specialist engineer is essential.

The roundtable discussions focused on the need to emphasize the role the welding specialist from the initial stage of the design, the harmonization of the concept of design with welding technology in mind, promotion of welded joints in relation to screw joints, the need to produce documentary materials related to the new classes of steel and new welding technologies, providing clear and simple recommendations for the choice of materials, according to European standards, the need of the designer to justify the choice of steel, the obligation of specialists in designing and welding to justify the execution class from the beginning of the process, the need for continuous improvement of the welding technologies in order to have better behavior in cyclic loads and corrosion. Concerning research and development, the need to develop some innovative and more economical welding technologies, wider use of modern welding technologies for steels with limited weldability, the implementation of some programs for welding simulation were all topics of the conference.

An important role is assigned to the architect; currently, the appearance and shape of metallic constructions became - at the demand of society - increasingly complicated for printing an emblematic character, for many of the newly executed constructions.

The meeting also set out recommendations on education in the field of welding, ensuring the adequate qualification of the welders, inclusion in the execution teams of welded structures of persons responsible for welding coordination, but also people responsible for welding inspection. Last but not least, it's under discussion the problem of implementing a harmonized international qualification system for welders.

The meeting aimed to debate the issues raised and establish some general recommendations in the field of conception and construction execution of welded metal, and welding education, a resolution in this sense has been discussed, and will be finalized and approved as soon as possible.
