On Wednesday, 21.11.2018, the Romanian Academy elected through the secret vote of the General Assembly, 4 titular members and 5 correspondent members. Among the corresponding members was also elected Prof.Phd.Eng. Liviu Marşavina, from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Politehnica University Timişoara, the head of the Materials Resistance department.

Prof. eng. Liviu Marşavina, PhD, has exceptional contributions in the areas of resistance and material testing, mechanics of rupture and fatigue of materials, numerical and experimental analysis of stresses and deformations. He is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in the experimental determination of Breaking Mechanics parameters, in the numerical simulation of crack propagation and in the development of modern methods of estimating the integrity and durability of structures.

The research activity was carried out in international research projects at Loughborough University and the University of Sheffiled (UK), Ghent University (Belgium), Lublin University of Technology (Poland), Slovak Academy of Science (Slovakia), national and international (FP7) research competitions, as well as research contracts with multinational companies such as Rolls Royce, Continental, Adidas, TRW.

As special achievements it is worth mentioning:

  • the methodology for determining the tension and sustainability factors of the aeronautical components implemented by Rolls Royce and based on the thermoelastic stress analysis;
  • numerical simulation and experimental validation of the influence of cracks on chlorine penetration in reinforced concrete and mortar structures;
  • the numerical calculation of the Breaking Mechanics parameters has been a constant concern, Marşavina proposing novel solutions for the cracking of the interface, fracture of the interface branched material more compliant, crack in the vicinity of the interface under the action of requests biaxial fractures in the vicinity of an interface in a specimen applied to the bending in four points, cracks perpendicular to the interface between a ceramic and a metallic material, parallel cracks in orthoprotoles, the flat shear specimen required for flat shear, the half - circular asymmetric bent test piece, three equal chinches in the orthotropic material;
  • development of models of elasto-plastic and viscoelastic material, which Adidas currently uses for the design of polyamide footwear for sports shoes;
  • characterization of cellular materials (aluminum and polyurethane foams) under the action of static, dynamic impact and fatigue. The group coordinated by Mr. Marsavina has the most important contributions in the world for determining tensile strength at breakage in mixed burst modes.

Scientometric data from the main databases shows the impact on the field of activity:

  • Web of Science (WoS) - 146 indexed scientific papers, of which 88 in WoS journals (over 40 first author or correspondent author), 965 citations (642 without autocitations) and h-Index 16;
  • Scopus - 177 scientific papers, 1305 citations and h-Index 19;
  • Google Scholar - 275 scientific papers, 1846 citations and h-Index 21.

Mr. Liviu Marsavina was a lecturer at several important scientific events, among which: Best Practices for Advanced Fracture Assessment organized by the European Commission - Joint Research Center, Institute for Energy, Petten, NETHERLANDS (2004), 9th International Fracture Mechanics Summer School, Varna, BULGARIA (2005), advanced courses organized at CISM Udine, ITALY (2009 and 2013), Frontiers on structural dynamics workshop at Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, CHINA (2017), 7th Symposium of the Israeli Structural Integrity Group, Tel Aviv University, ISRAEL (2018).

Mr. Marsavina is a member of the editorial committee of Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures (Wiley) in 2016, following the award of the Best Reviewer Award for 2016, the Italian Group of Fracture of 2014, International Journal of Structural Integrity (Emerald) in 2009. He also was editor of special numbers in the following journals: Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures, Virtual Issue - Mixed Mode Loading: Recent Developments (2016); Advances in Materials Science and Engineering, Special Issue - Brittle or Quasi-Brittle Fracture of Engineering Materials (2016); Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, Special Issue Mixed Mode Fracture (2017); Materials, Special Issue - Advances in Metal Foams (2018-2019). He is also a reviewer for 20 international journals.

As a recognition of international work, Professor Marsavina is, since 2014, co-chair of the TC13 - Education Technical Committee of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) and the representative of Romania since 2006 at conferences organized under the aegis of ESIS. Also, at the 22nd European Conference on Fracture International Conference held in Belgrade on 26-31 August 2018, he was elected Vice President of the European Structural Integrity Society.
