Sport has been an essential component of the training of the students of Politehnica University Timisoara since its inception, and the date of December 4 is a symbolic one, being the one that, in 1921, Politehnica Timisoara Sports Society was founded, which, over the years, has become a symbol of the city.
The current management of UPT marked the birth of one of the most precious symbols of the city, loved and encouraged by generations of supporters - POLI! On Wednesday, December 4, 2019, the Central Library of the UPT hosted a soul event dedicated to sport, which has been an essential component of the training of students from Politehnica Timisoara, since its inception.
In addition to presenting the history and tradition of sports in UPT, the event also addressed some current issues, including the takeover of CSU Politehnica Timișoara by UPT, the projects for the development of sports bases, the latest trophies obtained by athletes (at fencing and athletics) were presented , the book "Our Olympians" (author Mihaela Popescu) and a photo album of the Children's and Juniors’ Center were launched, the involvement of the famous footballer Ioan Timofte in the sports activities carried out within the UPT was announced and future projects regarding the ASU Politehnica Timișoara football team.
The first rector, Traian Lalescu, was also a great sports lover. Thus, in the autumn of 1920, shortly after the establishment of the Polytechnic School, it was decided to set up a new sports association: Politehnica Timisoara Sports Society, in short, "Poli", which will become, over the years, more than a symbol for society and football in Timisoara .
Consisting, at least in the beginning, exclusively of students, the SS Politehnica football team will start activating in the spring of next year, 1921. Although the group has been active for several months already, the Politehnica Sports Society was established on December 4, 1921. Physical education of was always a compulsory subject at the Polytechnic. Throughout its nearly 100 years of existence, sport has always played an important role at Politehnica University, both performance and mass sports.
Over time, all the leaders of Politehnica Timisoara have paid particular attention to sport, but also to the development of a material base to support this activity, so that today Politehnica University Timisoara can boast of sports bases as no other higher education institution has, made available free of charge to students.
