Work has begun on the new headquarters of the Faculty of Chemistry within the Timișoara Polytechnic

The works at the new headquarters of the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Engineering within Politehnica University Timișoara have debuted. On Thursday, October 29, 2020, in the presence of UPT management, guests, and the press, the pouring of the foundation of the new building, which will be, after completion, a modern building with a special architecture that will beautify Vasile Pârvan Boulevard begun.

Symbolically, the first quantities of concrete were poured by the rector of UPT, associate professor eng. Florin Dragan, Ph.D., former rectors prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Șerban, Ph.D., and prof. eng. Nicolae Robu, Ph.D., as well as the president of the UPT Senate, prof. eng. Radu Vasiu, Ph.D.

With a special design and facilities at the highest level, which will ensure excellent study conditions for approximately 650 students, two new buildings will be built next to the current building of the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. These will be built between the current faculty headquarters and the Students' Church. With the erection of the new buildings, the modernization of the current faculty headquarters will take place, as well as the construction of 110 parking spaces. The extension became possible following the access of non-reimbursable European funds, within the Regional Operational Program, Priority Axis 10 - Improving the educational infrastructure, the total value of the project amounting to over 27 million lei.

"It is a project with total funds of over 27 million lei, two buildings, one with ground floor, another with ground floor and three floors, which will allow us to bring the people from the other buildings of the Faculty of Chemistry in the same place. The building will be modern, will have 16 equipped laboratories, classrooms, amphitheaters, offices, and from this point of view, Politehnica does what it has always done in this first century of existence, to contribute to the development of Timisoara and the whole region, through the people it trains. We are glad that we are now starting this new construction on the eve of the new century of UPT. As you know, Politehnica has a consistent heritage, which all rectors, generation after generation, have taken care to develop. Through the good training we offer to Chemistry students, but also through the new specializations we will introduce or through the research that takes place in this field, we hope to attract foreign investments with this profile. There is a massive lack of engineers on the labor market, in all fields, including chemistry", said the acting rector of Politehnica University Timișoara, associate professor eng. Florin Dragan, Ph.D.

"This construction has an interesting story, which started in 2008, when Mr. Nicolae Robu, rector at the time, forced this building, the project was done but, unfortunately, things got stuck. There was another attempt in 2013, but again it was blocked. We came back again in 2017, with the project readapted to the new conditions, in 2018 it was submitted, in 2019 the financing contract was approved, in 2020 the technical project and here it is, working with a fairly tight deadline, but we hope it will conclude at the end of next year", added the former rector, prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Șerban, Ph.D.

The former mayor of Timișoara, but also a former rector of Politehnica, prof. eng. Nicolae Robu, Ph.D., declared: “I have always been with my soul with Politehnica, because I trained there, I practiced there for so many years and, also, I took responsibilities. Since 2008 we have had this initiative, to finish Vasile Pârvan Boulevard with this construction, which also gives a certain symmetry. It will be seen in the end how welcome it is. Unfortunately, the times were as they were and the construction could not start until now, after 12 years, but I want to congratulate the colleagues who followed me, rector Șerban, rector Drăgan, for perseverance because it is finished. It will be a beautiful building on the one hand, which will complete Vasile Pârvan Boulevard, and on the other hand a functional one. It will offer modern spaces, the project is very good and it will offer an excellent infrastructure for education and research of the Politehnica University of Timișoara”.
