Every school boasts with its graduates, especially when they have remarkable careers. And Politehnica University Timişoara has reached, in almost a century of existence, a plethora of personalities who, besides an exceptional career, contributed decisively to the development of the region, the country and even beyond its borders.
Undoubtedly, the generation that graduated from the Faculty of Electrical and Power Engineering of Politehnica University Timişoara in 1958 was a brilliant one. A generation of 133 students admitted to college in 1953 and 84 graduates with electrification engineer degrees, respectively electromechanical engineer, after 5 years of intense study, with outstanding teachers including Plautius Andronescu, Toma Dordea, Corneliu Micloşi and Aurel Nanu. A generation that academic Toma Dordea said was one of his best promotions. A generation that has given numerous leaders of production, education, research and development, management scientists, eight doctors in science, numerous national and international experts, and last but not least a Doctor Honoris Causa of UPT and UVT (Peter Freund) and a Rector of UPT (Alexandru Nichici).
A generation that caught the war, the establishment of the communist dictatorship, the 1956 uprising, the Revolution of 1989, which carried out engineering activities both in Romania and, among others, in Algeria, Canada, Switzerland, France, Germany, Israel, Great Britain, the United States or even Zair. This generation gathered these days at Alma Mater to celebrate the 60th anniversary of graduating from the faculty.
The anniversary program began on 25 May in the Polyvalent Hall of the Central Library of Politehnica University Timişoara, with a festive gathering titled "60 Years since Graduation of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Timisoara". The program included the traditional Gaudeamus Igitur, the call of the graduates, greetings of the UPT rector, Viorel-Aurel Şerban, those of the president of Politehnica Foundation, Ivan Bogdanov, but also a moment of silence in the memory of the missing persons, followed, of course, by the speeches and exchanges of the Electro 1958 graduates. 87-year-old Ernst Konig was the first who recalled his emotions from admission, when 600 candidates competed and only 133 were admitted, was also the word of the dean of the generation, but also the stifling heat of the graduation in 1958. During the talks, the personality of Peter Freund, an outstanding member of the generation and maybe, as mentioned, "the greatest scientist born in Timisoara", who, unfortunately, died only a few months before the meeting, was brought up. On this occasion, Nicolae Muntean, official referent, presented the homage volume "Roads in Life", edited by Alexandru Nichici and the Politehnica Publishing House, a true fresco of the lives of the graduates of that generation, from the period of the student's studies to the present.
On Saturday, May 26, in the beautiful Hall of the Senate of Politehnica University Timişoara, a public debate took place, moderated by Marius Popa, Honorary Consul of Holland in Timisoara, between former and current students and graduates of Politehnica having as subject " An Ark Over Time: Are There Anymore Recipes of Success? Are there any life patterns in the city with the fastest internet speed? Who is teaching who nowadays?" Graduates 60 years ago remembered the life they lived during their studies, how they learned at that time, how teachers were, what they did during their free time, such as exams, and gave their advice to the current generation of students. The event ended with the traditional photo in front of the Rectorate of Politehnica University Timişoara, but the anniversary program continued with a trip in the Baile Herculane area and its surroundings.
