Politehnica University Timisoara came up with an innovation in terms of admission in the academic year 2020-2021, introducing, for the first time in the country, an exam based on a portfolio of achievements, as an alternative to the classic written exam or admission based on competition.

At the Faculty of Automation and Computers and at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies, the candidates could be admitted based on a portfolio consisting of prizes and mentions at school olympiads and other national competitions of Informatics / Algorithmics, prizes, mentions, participations with notable results in Hardware & Software & Automation & Electronics & Communications (IT&C) competitions, other outstanding achievements Hardware & Software & Automation & Electronics & Communications (IT&C). The portfolio was marked as admitted/rejected, followed by an online interview, in which the candidates were able to present their portfolio and answer the commission's questions.

Portfolio admission was a challenge for both the candidates and the admissions committee, but in the end, it can be considered a success because it allowed attracting young people who have shown concern and passion for these fields throughout high school. This innovative way of admission, which will be maintained in the future, has attracted valuable candidates (with admission averages over 9.50), even from more remote areas of the country. For example, a candidate from Bucharest with exceptional results during high school said he chose Politehnica University Timisoara due to the fact that admission based on portfolio offered him the opportunity to be recognized for his results and work during high school. The interviews, conducted online, without any problems, confirmed, where appropriate, the value of the submitted portfolio.

In the case of the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning, the challenge was, in a sense, even greater, given the large number of registered candidates, which required the engagement of a considerable number of teachers of the faculty. And in this case, the admission based on the portfolio was a premiere in terms of the entrance exam to the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning. In addition, unlike the other faculties of architecture in the country, admission also included an interview test, in which candidates had the opportunity to present their portfolio and remove any doubts about its authorship, especially since the interview also had a 15-minute practice test. In fact, in order to ensure total transparency in terms of admission, the faculty management decided to publish on its website a virtual exhibition with all the candidates' portfolios, accompanied by the scores awarded. Even if the interview test scared some of the candidates, many of them being for the first time in front of such an examination method, more candidates entered the exam than in previous years, the satisfaction of the management of the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning, but also of Politehnica University Timisoara, being even bigger, given that it was the only one in the country that provided such a test. In conclusion, although the effort was much greater than in the case of the practical drawing test on the spot, the online admission competition was a successful experience.

For example, we present video material on how the admission based on the portfolio was carried out at Politehnica University Timisoara:
