FameLab 2021 has found its winners from the regional pre-selection

A UPT student will represent Timisoara at the national final

Politehnica University Timișoara and the West University of Timișoara organized the regional selection in the western part of the country for the national final of FameLab 2021 - the largest international communication competition in science. The winner will represent Timisoara at the national final of FameLab Romania and all competitors on the podium will benefit from a communication masterclass given by specialists from Great Britain and Romania.

In the regional selection, each FameLab competitor had only three minutes to capture the audience and the jury with a rigorous, original and interactive scientific presentation without using PowerPoint slides or other resources.

The members of the jury, Radu Vasiu, professor at Politehnica University Timișoara and president of the university Senate, Rodica Lighezan, director of the Regional Blood Transfusion Center in Timișoara and associate professor at the "Victor Babes" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and Andrei Crăciun, engineer, digitization and data analysis sector coordinator within the West University, evaluated the candidates based on three criteria - content, clarity and charisma - and nominated the three finalists of FameLab 2021 Timișoara.

The third place of the competition was obtained by Marina Adriana Mercioni, Ph.D. student at the Faculty of Automation and Computers at Politehnica University Timisoara, who gave a presentation on artificial intelligence and how it can support education.

Radu Murariu, a first-year student at the “Victor Babeș” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timișoara, placed second with a presentation on primary neural networks and their applications.

Ina Maria Carauleanu, a first-year student at the Faculty of Automation and Computers within UPT, obtained the first place and will represent Timișoara at the FameLab 2021 Romania national final. She fascinated the jury with a presentation on artificial neurons - explaining what they are and how they are useful to us.

The international science communication competition FameLab is organized by the British Council and Cheltenham Science Festivals, is in its twelfth edition in Romania and takes place annually in over 20 countries. Details can be found at: https://www.britishcouncil.ro/famelab
