The 21st Century Junior Mathematics Olympics saw Romania win the first place, with five gold and one silver medal. The Society of Mathematical Sciences in Romania announced that our country ranked I with 219 points out of 240 possible. The Romanian team was prepared and led by Andrei Alex Eckstein of Politehnica University Timisoara, as team leader, alongside Dănuţ Arama from the ”Costache Negri" National College from Targu Ocna (deputy leader) and Cristian Lazăr from the National College from Iaşi (observer).

The 23rd edition of the Balkan Junior Mathematics Olympics 2019 (JBMO 2019) took place from 20 to 25 June 2019 in Agros, Cyprus. JBMO is an annual competition dedicated to students in the Balkan area who are passionate about mathematics and who at the time of the competition are not yet 15 and a half years old.

At JBMO 2019, teams of 6 pupils from Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Greece, Northern Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia and a team of 4 Montenegrin students and teams from invited countries: Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Ecuador, France and Kazakhstan.

The Team Leader, Professor Andrei Alex Eckstein, is employed by the Department of Mathematics of UPT, but he has also worked for many years in pre-university education, as he has been working on the preparation of Romania's team over the past years. He is editor in chief of the Timisoara Mathematics Magazine (a magazine founded by Traian Lalescu in 1921, immediately after the founding of Politehnica University), member of the jury of the main local, regional and national mathematics competitions, collaborator of several mathematics journals, member of the committees to prepare topics for various regional and national competitions. He has participated in the preparation and selection of the national junior group for the Balkan Olympics since 2010, being a deputy leader and leader of the Romanian team at Balcaniada in Mathematics since 2011.
