The amateur radio operators from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications, and Information Technology at Politehnica University Timișoara, consisting of professors Ciprian Dughir, Florin Alexa, and Teodor Petrița, achieved a remarkable feat during Open Campus Night. This event celebrated European Researchers' Night and established 723 connections with operators from around the world, using a special call sign.
In preparation for this event, a special call sign (YP100UPT) was obtained from ANCOM to commemorate the 100 years of university campus in Timișoara. This call sign was used for the duration of the 4-hour event. Ciprian Dughir (YO2LQR), along with partners from the QSO Banat Timișora radio club (YO2KQT), connected to 723 radio amateurs from four continents, a result that exceeded all expectations.
For the organizers of such events, obtaining a special call sign is a source of pride, and for passionate radio amateurs, connecting to these special call signs, which are highly sought after, represents a unique opportunity and a significant achievement.
The group of radio amateurs at Politehnica University Timișoara is not new to such achievements. On the 30th anniversary of the twinning of Timișoara and Karlsruhe (Germany), they established a radio connection with the University of Applied Sciences in Karlsruhe. This occasion reinforced the desire to improve the collaboration between the two universities for their mutual benefit and the communities they serve.
The same group of radio amateurs is also considering establishing a radio club at Politehnica University Timișoara in the near future. This club would involve students from the faculty since, even though there are some subjects related to radio communications, complex knowledge from various fields is required to operate as a radio amateur.
