EDEN Annual Conference at UPT

Premiere in the academic community of Timișoara. The first entirely virtual conference dedicated to digital education and artificial intelligence took place between June 22-24, including presentations of 90 selected academic papers, ten workshops, eight world-class keynote speakers, as well as social events. Politehnica University Timișoara organized the event through the ID / IFR and e-Learning Center together with the EDEN International Association.

Digital education has proven that it can change learning and working practices in today's society. The reality of the need to learn throughout life through lifelong learning remains as urgent as ever. Intelligence, both human and artificial, is the focus of attention. Understanding students and their way of learning, as well as the application of new technologies in education, inspires further development.

The EDEN 2020 conference focused on contemporary educational concepts and advanced practices, approaches, and tools for innovative digital solutions in education. In today's education context during the pandemic, they are all the more relevant, and at EDEN 2020, the latest research results in digital education were presented.

With this conference, Politehnica University Timișoara launched an application dedicated to unique, virtual academic conferences, ConferenceUPT (https://conference.upt.ro/) with tools for organizing work sessions, integration of academic papers, for including the presentations made and videoconference connectivity. It also provides direct communication functionality, offering unlimited access to all participants to create a virtual EDEN2020 community.

Eight internationally-renowned speakers presented at EDEN2020, joining virtually from Australia, Europe, and the United States. For the second time at a conference organized by UPT, Martin Dougiamas, founder and CEO of Moodle, the world's most widely used educational platform, spoke about the impact of open technologies and collaboration with UNESCO. One of the most successful women in robotics, Prof. Daniela Rus of MIT, the USA, director of the Center for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence and one of the scientists behind advanced robots in Boston, exposed the impact of artificial intelligence on how who will work people in the future. Prof. Denise Whitelock, Acting Director of the Institute of Educational Technology at Open University, UK, spoke about advanced digital assessment practices with the help of artificial intelligence in education. George Dimitrov, Deputy Director for Digital Education and Innovation of the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport, and Culture, presented the recent European Pact for Digital Education. Professor Demetrios Sampson, from Piraeus University, Greece, spoke about educational data analysis in online education. Prof. Jesus Boticario from UNED, Spain, analyzed the extent to which universities understand the extensive use of artificial intelligence in education. Dr. Diana Andone, Ph.D.,  director of the eLearning Center of Politehnica University Timisoara, spoke about digital learning in UPT, focusing on how the Romanian society prepares for the digital future.

During the three days of the conference, over 90 selected academic papers were presented, published, and integrated into international academic databases. In addition to the ten scheduled workshops, EDEN included conceptual sessions on the experience of Covid-19 webinars and online education in recent times, on open educational technologies, on leadership, digital culture, and digital skills. On this occasion, the European Commission's Department of Education launched the European Digital Education Plan for public consultation. Open University Great Britain had a 50th-anniversary session. The conference included a Scientific Symposium dedicated to Ph.D. students, with the progress report of young scientists and discussions of experienced university teachers. Politehnica University Timișoara announced, on this occasion, a series of exciting social events. Heritage under the spotlight, a virtual tour of Timișoara made in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture and City planning, live music or virtual culinary experiences made with the partners of the eLearning Center (CoderDojo, Romanian Science Festival, Științescu, Timotion, Ambasada, ​​Faber, Bega Blues Band) are all part of the cultural projects for Timișoara European Capital of Culture 2021.
