The Library of Politehnica University Timisoara hosted on Monday, January 10, 2022 the opening of an incredible exhibition put together by students from the Faculty of Architecture and City  Planning – EXPO FABRICAȚIE DIGITALĂ (EXPO DIGITAL MANUFACTURING) – comprised of 3D-printed projects made by the students from the “Furniture and Interior Design” specialization and the master students from the “New Trends, Materials and Technologies in Interior Design” program.

The displayed projects were meant to familiarize students with 3D-printing technologies and equipments and are the result of two tasks the students had to solve over the first semester: one of parametric formal exploration materialized in a series of vase-type geometric iterations, and the other contains a collection of interior ambiance items – furniture pieces, decorative or functional items.

The first task was done by the third-year students from the bachelor study program “Furniture and Interior Design” at the Computer-assisted Design course under the guidance of lecturer dr. architect Diana Giurea, Ph.D. In the theoretical part of the course, the students had learned about digital modeling tools they later used to generate vase-like objects. The projects that were exposed are based on parametric digital modeling operations that allow for a quick and efficient exploration of a shape, offering the possibility to investigate and determine a considerable number of formal iterations. The exhibition includes 30 projects displayed through illustrations accompanied by the physical models.

The second task was aimed at the master students from the first year of the New Trends, Materials and Technologies in Interior Design master program, at the elective course Advanced 3D Modeling and Digital Manufacturing under the guidance of lect. dr. arch. Anghel Andreea, Ph.D. The 3D modeling course focused on experimenting with various 2D and 3D construction methods through practical exercises, gradually moving from simple shapes with straight surfaces to more complex shapes with curved shapes. The final task for the students was to use their creativity and practice the learned construction methods by creating some pieces of furniture or decorative or functional items specific to interior design. Those projects were then made reality thorugh 3D printing. Thus, the students learned the necessary steps for 3D printing: creating a digital model, saving the model in STL formal, importing the file in the software program (slicer) and generating G-code, preparing 3D printing and post-processing. The exhibition includes 21 projects displayed through illustrations accompanied by the physical model of the objects.

For both tasks, the projects were materialized with 3D printing technology equipment available at the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning and the UPT Library.

The exhibition is open between January 10 and February 16, 2022, in the central lobby of the UPT Library during working hours.
