International Conference on Technical Translation at Politehnica University Timisoara

Given the importance of technical translation, emphasized in specialized articles, according to which 90% of translations in the global translation market are technical, the Senate Hall of Politehnica University Timisoara hosted the opening of the international conference "Translating Europe Workshops. Technical Translation Today" on Thursday, November 16, 2023. This event was organized by the UPT Center for Advanced Research in Translation Studies – PoliCAT, with the support of the European Commission Directorate-General for Translation, as part of the Translating Europe Workshops series.

The conference brought together renowned figures in the field, established specialists in their domains, with a series of subjects of interest scheduled for discussion during plenary sessions and workshops. Topics included the skills required for technical translators, assessment of translation quality, the role of technology in translation, the importance of terminology for translators, and more.

During the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. Daniel Dejica, Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, spoke about the efforts made within UPT to achieve excellence in technical translation. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Florin Drăgan, the Rector of Politehnica University Timisoara, welcomed the participants to the conference, highlighting the significance of the year 2023 when Timisoara is the European Capital of Culture, and Politehnica celebrates 100 years of the university campus. Daniela Badea, representing the European Commission Directorate-General for Translation, thanked the Faculty of Communication Sciences within UPT for their excellent collaboration in organizing the conference.

The event included several plenary sessions delivered by Daniel Dejica, the Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences and director of Politehnica Advanced Translation Studies Center, Loredana Pungă, Dean of the Faculty of Letters, West University, Kirk St. Amant, a professor at Louisiana Tech University, USA, Jody Byrne, from SAP Ireland, Istvan Lengyel, founder of BeLazy and former CEO at memoQ, Barcelona, Spain, Ramunė Kasperė, Vice-Dean, Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania. Additionally, a roundtable discussion on "Technical Translation Today" was organized, along with a series of workshops led by Carmen Toma, Department of Romanian Language, DGT Brussels, Belgium, Annmaria Kilyeni, Department of Communication and Foreign Languages, Politehnica University Timisoara, Agnes Kiss, head of the Translation Unit, Continental Timisoara, Dana Szabados, an independent translator.

The conference "Translating Europe Workshops. Technical Translation Today" was organized as part of the Faculty of Communication Sciences Days, commemorating 30 years of existence for the communication and translation specializations at Politehnica University Timisoara.
