Monday, January 20, 2020, the Library of Politehnica University Timișoara hosted SCMUPT 2020 (UPT Mobile Communications Session, 8th edition), a competition dedicated to mobile applications, designed for students from the Computers specialty at Politehnica University Timișoara, which is organized annually in the winter session, during the month of January, and aims to increase and attract the young people passionate about programming mobile applications, both in Timisoara and at national level.

The competition does not seek to impose a certain level of difficulty or complexity of the projects, but seeks valuable ideas. This year, the competition was organized into two sections, with different judging criteria and rankings: Utility & Lifestyle Apps and Games & Entertainment Apps.

Following the judging, the award podium, for the two sections, is presented as follows:

Utility & Lifestyle Apps

• Iris Muntean - SmartTraveling: choosing the perfect vacation destination using neural networks and Șold Andrei - Jober: Uber for jobs;
• Alic Rareș, Butnariu Gabriel, Purțuc Robert - Mechanical Arm Controller: mechanical arm control and graphs with machine learning.

Entertainment Apps

• Palko Adrian - Pocket Invaders : the beloved tower defense game, now in AR!
• Debucean Caius - Wave: Spotify control through gestures;
• Roşu Andrei, Steleac Raul - Object Hunt: search for objects using the camera.

The winners of the first places in each section were awarded with an entrance ticket to "Mobile World Congress Barcelona", the largest European event dedicated to mobile technology, which took place on 24-27 February 2020.

The event was organized with the support of Timișoara Mobile Development Group, Banat IT Association and ARIES-TM, who were with the organizers at previous editions.

Florin Drăgan, PhD, is the new elected rector of Politehnica University Timișoara (Conf.univ.dr.ing. Florin Drăgan este noul rector ales al Universității Politehnica Timișoara)

The elections for the seat of rector of Politehnica University Timișoara were closed on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, from the first round. Following the voting process, the newly elected rector of the institution, for a 4-year term (in the 2020-2024 legislature) is assoc. prof. eng. Florin Drăgan, PhD.

During the electoral process, of the 657 teachers enrolled on the lists, 590 were present to the vote. There were 573 valid votes cast and 17 votes canceled. After counting the validly expressed bulletins, associate professor eng. Florin Drăgan, PhD, obtained 418 votes, and prof. eng. Ilare Bordeașu, PhD, obtained 155 votes.

Between 4 and 10 February 2020, the documents regarding the election of the Rector of UPT will be sent to the Ministry of Education and Research, for the validation by the Ministry. After confirmation and appointment, by Order of the Minister of Education and Research of the rector of UPT, during March, he appoints the vice-rectors, with the consultation of the Senate, and subsequently triggers the public competitions for the appointment of the deans of the faculties.

Assoc. prof. eng. Florin Drăgan, PhD, succeeds the current rector, prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Șerban, PhD, in whose team he was the vice-rector responsible for the educational process, student matters and quality assurance.
