The field of Civil Engineering studies within the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Politehnica University Timișoara, with a tradition of almost 80 years and a wide national and international recognition, was ranked first in the country, based on a comparative evaluation of universities by fields of studies, conducted in 2020 by the National School of Political and Administrative Studies.
Politehnica University Timișoara has created the prestige it enjoys today and the leading position it occupies nationally and internationally through the dedication of its teaching staff. Since its establishment, here taught teachers of high professional standing, engineers from the booming industry in the area, who have committed themselves with all determination in building a school in line with the aspirations and spirit of Timisoara, a spirit that had to enter, as King Ferdinand said, within the walls of the first higher education institution in the west of the country.
If today Politehnica can boast of walls, the spirit existed long before them. And all the difficulties of the beginning could be overcome by the exceptional quality of the teachers, whose high academic performance propelled the Timișoara Polytechnic among the perennial institutional values of Romania. Some teachers created real institutions around them in their fields, many of them premieres for the country. And in these schools, a plethora of eminent students was formed, who carried on the tradition.
One of these schools is the Civil Engineering School, which fulfilled the dream for which one of the famous founders of the Polytechnic School, the professor, engineer, and architect Victor Vlad, had been working for almost 20 years. The Faculty of Civil Engineering within the Timișoara Polytechnic was established by Decree-Law no. 3134/11 of November 1941, specializing in Civil and Industrial Constructions.
The Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Politehnica University Timișoara has seen continuous development and diversification, especially after the education reform of 1948. Renowned professors brought prestige to the faculty, creating exceptional schools of Civil Engineering: Pompiliu Nicolau - hydro-technical constructions, Nicolae Maior and Laurențiu Nicoară - transport infrastructures, Dan Mateescu - metal constructions, Constantin Avram - reinforced concrete. Even now, the Faculty of Civil Engineering has valuable teachers, with international recognition, members of the Romanian Academy or the Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences, members of various international structures in the field.
As such, it is not a surprise to designate the field of Civil Engineering within the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Timisoara as the top in the country, according to a proposal for comparative evaluation of universities by field of study, made in 2020 by the National School of Political Studies and Administrative, based on a set of relevant indicators, which considered the quality of human resources, the impact and performance of the scientific activity, the funds attracted for scientific research, institutional and research capacity.
Furthermore, it is not surprising that starting with 2017, there was a continuous increase in the number of students in the first year of undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Timisoara (by 17% in 2018, 48% in 2019, and by 83% in 2020). In 2020, admission to the faculty saw the largest increase in UPT.
The construction sector has developed especially in Romania in recent years. Amid a pandemic crisis, the volume of construction works increased in the first 11 months of 2020 by over 16%. A significant factor was also the stimulating salary legislation, where, as in the field of IT, employees in the construction sector benefit from tax benefits starting in 2019.
The perspective of 2021-2027 is particularly favorable for the construction market, taking into account the existing infrastructure projects stimulated by the European Union funds made available to Romania during this period.
