24 June 2019

A year ago, in August 2018, a group of Vietnamese former students of the Polytechnic Institute ”Traian Vuia", as the institution was called from 1969 to 1974 when they were studying in Timisoara, returned to the university they learned in, for a meeting of the soul. They remembered, on this occasion, with their Romanian colleagues, the pleasant moments during the student years, reminded the teams that had then formed between Romanian and Vietnamese students to teach them the Romanian language, which although they did not use for over 40 years, they still speak very well. Besides, the former Vietnamese students, some of them now in high-ranking positions in the state, have only words of praise for the Timişoara Polytechnic School.

Of those 20 who came to visit, 16 are former students of Politehnica, 11 of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and 5 of the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry. At that time, the Vietnamese state, destroyed by war, needed specialists to put the shoulder to the country's reconstruction. The Communist regime of Romania at that time accepted them to study.

Now, the Vietnamese state wanted to express its gratitude to those who helped them when they were most in need. Thus, on Saturday, June 22, 2019, a new delegation from Vietnam was present in the Senate Hall of Politehnica University Timișoara for a festivity to hand some diplomas and medals from the Vietnamese Government as a sign of gratitude for what it did to Romania and, in particular, the Polytechnic Institute ”Traian Vuia" in Timisoara, both professionally and humanely.

During the ceremony, diplomas were awarded to Politehnica University Timișoara and the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, as well as medals for the former professors: prof. Constantin Avram, PhD, correspondent member of the Romanian Academy and Rector of the Polytechnic Institute from 1963 to 1971; prof. Ioan Anton, PhD, member of the Romanian Academy and Rector of Politehnica between 1971 and 1981; prof. Coriolan Dragulescu, PhD, member of the Romanian Academy, former Dean of the Industrial Chemistry Faculty, rector of the institute and Deputy Minister of Education; prof. Vasile Cocheci, , PhD, Corresponding Member of the Romanian Academy, former Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry from 1967 to 1976; prof. Gheorghe Savii, PhD, professor emeritus, former dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from 1967 to 1974; prof. Francis Carol Klepp, PhD, Honorary Professor of UPT and many international scientific societies.

Diplomas and medals from the Vietnamese Government were handed over by Mr. Bui Trong Dinh, vice-president of the Vietnam-Romania Friendship Association. Of the then teachers, only Francis Carol Klepp is still alive and he was present at the event and spoke again to his former students. The other medals were handed over to the descendants of the then teachers, children or even grandchildren.

The promoter of the whole action is Vu Quang Trinh, a former student at Politehnica Timișoara, from 1969 to 1974, now a businessman who handed the Politehnica University Timișoara and the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Engineering ”Memorial Gifts" from former Vietnamese students. These were handed assoc. prof. eng. Florin Dragan, PhD, vice-rector of Politehnica University Timișoara, and prof. eng. Nicolae Vaszilcsin, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Engineering.

The moment also culminated with the meeting of the class that graduated the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry 45 years ago, Vu Quang Trinh being one of the then graduates.

Between 1968 and 1982, as a result of an agreement between Romania and Vietnam, several Vietnamese students made their studies in Romania, more than 500 being graduates of the Polytechnic Institute”Traian Vuia" in Timisoara.
