The research teams within Politehnica University Timișoara have made, for the first time at least on a national scale, the prototype of a device for sterilizing the exhaled air of patients, with which intensive care units could be equipped, and which would be especially useful now in the fight against coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

The operation of the device is based on the reduction of the microbiological load by exposing the air exhaled by the critically ill patients infected with SARS-CoV-2, who are mechanically intubated and ventilated, to UVC radiation. The device is connected to the exhaust port of the ventilator which currently communicates freely with the atmosphere.

The device for sterilizing the air expired by patients, made by the teams of the departments CAICON (Applied Chemistry and Organic and Natural Compounds Engineering) and MEO (Measurements and Optical Electronics) from Politehnica University Timișoara, with the support of a group of volunteers who want to collaborate on product improvement, was considered by anesthesiologists as extremely useful.

The prototype is in the testing phase in the laboratory, on an intensive care ventilator, the preliminary results looking promising. The Oncogen Institute will provide the necessary infrastructure for microbiologically testing the device. After the tests are completed, Politehnica University Timișoara intends to patent the device.
